Is it worth fixing an AC over 12 years old?

Accepted Answer

Depends on the failure. Capacitor or fan motor — fix it. Compressor or evaporator coil on an R-22 system — usually replace. We give you the math both ways.

What if my AC is leaking water onto the floor or ceiling?

Usually one of three things — a clogged condensate drain line backing up into the pan, a frozen evaporator coil thawing all at once, or an indoor unit that was pitched wrong on install. We clear the line, find the freeze cause (low refrigerant, dirty filter, weak blower), and check the pitch. Why does my AC only leak on humid days?

More humidity = more condensate produced. A drain line that's 70% blocked may handle a dry day but overflow on a sticky one. The clog is still there — it just shows up on the worst days.

My mini split head smells musty when it runs. What is going on?

Almost always biofilm on the evaporator coil and inside the blower wheel — humid Brooklyn summers grow it fast, especially on heads that ran all winter on heat then sat damp. Will a Nest or ecobee work with my old Brooklyn boiler?
