Carrier HVAC Repair in Brooklyn

Carrier gas furnaces are the most common forced-air heat in Brooklyn brownstones and co-ops, and they fail in a handful of predictable ways once the thermostat starts calling for heat every morning. The furnace tells you which one: the status light on the control board flashes a two-digit code, and on Infinity systems the wall control logs it. We start there, then verify at the part, because a code names the circuit that tripped — not always the part that caused it.

Ignition. No heat with the inducer running and no click or glow is usually the hot-surface igniter: they crack with age and stop glowing, and the board locks out on code 14 after three attempts. Flame sensor. Burners that light, run a few seconds, and drop out — then retry and lock out on 14 or 34 — are the flame-sensing rod, coated with oxide so the board cannot prove flame. Cleaning it fixes most; a weak igniter or low gas pressure can mimic it. Pressure switch and inducer. Code 31 means the pressure switch never closed: a clogged condensate trap on a 90-plus condensing furnace, a blocked vent or intake, a split hose, or an inducer motor that is losing speed. We clear the trap and test the inducer before anyone sells a switch. Limit and short cycling. Codes 13 and 33 are the high-limit circuit: the furnace overheats and shuts the burners off before the room is warm, then starts again minutes later. A dirty filter or a blower that is not moving enough air is the usual cause; a cracked heat exchanger is the one we rule out, and we do that with a proper inspection, not a guess. Blower. On variable-speed and ECM models, code 41 or a blower that runs constantly, ramps to the wrong stage, or never starts points at the motor module or the communication between it and the board. Control board. Burnt relay contacts, a blown low-voltage fuse (code 24), or an Infinity board that has stopped talking to the furnace all end the heat call — and on Infinity we isolate which component dropped off the bus before ordering a board.

Carrier heat pumps in heating. Greenspeed and Infinity heat pumps carry their own winter faults — a defrost board or sensor that leaves the outdoor coil iced, a reversing valve that never shifts to heat, backup heat that runs constantly or not at all. Many Brooklyn Carrier systems are Hybrid Heat dual-fuel: a heat pump with a gas furnace as backup, where the control decides which runs. When that changeover misbehaves the house is cold even though both machines work, and it is a control or sensor setting, not a compressor.
